Documen splitting is a functionality which refers to splitting of a singleGL line into multiple lines to enable reporting at profit center level or segment level.
What is the need for document splitting?
When in a single transaction multiple profit centers are involved. Then to report for each profit center, GL line item in finance document needs to be splitted into involved profit centers.
For example, company bills the customer for two different materials belonging to two different profit centers. Then sales GL line has to be splitted into two lines (one for each profit center).

Document splitting is an inbuilt functionality of sap. We just need to activate it properly.
We need to configure splitting characteristics in sap. Mostly splitting characteristics is profit center or segment.
